What I Learned Learning YouTube

My Journey Between Excitement and Overwhelm

If I had to pick the single biggest focus in my life right now, it would without a doubt be “learning YouTube.” It all started with simple curiosity: “Should I try making a video?” or “Everyone else seems to be doing it, so why couldn’t I?” But once I stepped into the world of YouTube, a wave of complex and dynamic emotions came washing over me—far deeper than I had ever anticipated.

Today, I want to reflect on the honest feelings I’ve experienced while learning and attempting YouTube, along with the valuable lessons I’ve gathered along the way.

1. The Initial Excitement Meets a High Wall of Reality

When I first listened to YouTube lectures and mapped out my channel concept, my mind was already celebrating like a creator with 100,000 subscribers. Just imagining what content to post, what background music to select, and what captions to add made my heart race. The thought of having a personal space to share my stories with the world filled me with immense anticipation.

However, it didn’t take long for those high expectations to collide with reality.

The very first barrier standing in my way was the technical learning curve. When I first opened the video editing software, the countless icons, timelines, and menus felt like a foreign language. Performing a simple cut-edit required rewatching clips dozens of times, and finding just the right font or sound effect often consumed hours.

From planning and filming to editing, nothing came easy. Talking alone in front of a camera felt incredibly awkward and embarrassing. Confirming my own face and voice on recorded footage was a constant exercise in reality checks.

2. Comparison, Anxiety, and Self-Doubt

Once a video is finished and uploaded to the channel, a new set of emotions rolls in: an obsession with views and subscriber counts.

Watching the view count stay completely still hours after publishing often led to doubts like, “Am I wasting my time?” or “Why is nobody interested in my content?”

Comparing myself to established creators with polished, professional videos only made things harder. Thoughts like, ‘There are so many talented creators out there—what value does my rough video even bring?’ weighed heavily on my mind, bringing moments of frustration. There were many days when the temptation to give up crossed my mind.

3. Small Breakthroughs and Priceless Realizations

Over time, however, my perspective on YouTube began to shift.

One day, I noticed a short comment left by a viewer: “Great video! This was really helpful!” In that single moment, all the hours of editing, exhaustion, and frustration seemed to melt away.

I realized that behind those small numbers—10 views, 50 views—there were real human beings who chose to watch my creation through to the end. Letting go of my fixation on metrics allowed me to see the true value of the learning process itself:

The Joy of Growth: A month ago, I could barely manage basic cut-editing. Now, I can animate captions and time video transitions to the beat of the music.

A Space for Self-Reflection: Writing scripts forced me to look inward, helping me better understand what topics I care about and what truly sparks my passion.

The Power of Consistency: Even without instant results, taking small steps every day taught me patience and built quiet self-confidence.

4. YouTube Is an Art of the “Process,” Not Just the “Destination”

The overarching emotion I feel now while learning YouTube is pride in taking action.

Tasks that once felt daunting and intimidating are now things I can navigate step-by-step. Creating a finished piece of video content with my own hands has brought fresh energy and vitality into my life.

I no longer feel the urge to compare my journey to others or rush the process. I’ve learned that what matters most isn’t rapid success, but finding my own sustainable pace that keeps the experience enjoyable.

Are you currently hesitating to start YouTube, or struggling through the initial learning curve?

Feeling overwhelmed and uncertain at first is a completely natural part of the journey. But once you push through that phase and start building videos that carry your voice, the sense of accomplishment is unlike anything else.

To every beginner creator sitting in front of an editor today: keep going! Let’s move forward—slowly, steadily, and at our own pace.
